Moving To Wordpress With Fear and Trembling

I have made the decision to change to Wordpress from Blogger but I am filled with anxiety over this decision. According to the Pro bloggers out there, Wordpress is the best platform so far. Problem is it needs more understanding of the HTLM codes and stuff....

I remember when I first started this blog. I knew nothing about creating a blog, and doing the fun stuff like embedding You Tube in my post. Now that I am moving to Wordpress ... I have the same feeling of "not knowing anything"....

I'm hiring our friend Eryck to help me out.... I need prayers on this....

To all the Wordpress user out there ... any helpful tips? reminders? encouragement?

I'll take blogspot over wordpress because it is easier to post pictures and videos on blogspot.

That said, I have to say thanks for stopping by my place ... looking at your site today refreshed me.

By coincidence I decided to move my blog over to wordpress yesterday! I'm still kind of in 2 minds about it, but am loving it so far. There are some features that are better than blogger and the blog templates are much more stylish (I think). I haven't figured out how to do half the things I want to yet. But a major bonus was that you can import your whole blog from blogger into wordpress (it took hours!) so you don't have to loose anything you've written if you want to delete your blog on blogger.

I was also a blogger user before but I enjoyed wordpress more than blogger. Ironically, I find wordpress easier if you don't know much about HTML. It's easier to manage. Also, like what Kamsin said, the templates are more stylish and you can import all your posts and you won't lose anything.

The only down side I think is that you can't modify your web page as freely as can in blogger. You won't be able to insert pics, or links or other blog enhancements in the sidebar (unless they can be integrated in the template.)

Also, you have to really think about this before you import your posts to wordpress because in my experience, after importing my archives to wordpress, my posts in blogger were messed up.

I hope this helps. ;)

I'm sure you will learn the features of WP in no time, Liza! (I like WP much better than Blogger. However, as Arthur already pointed out, you cannot really modify the sidebar so much. That is, if you are going to use the free version of Wordpress.com and not the hosted WP.)

And yes, the new version of WP has now an Import feature which makes it easier for you to transfer your files from Blogspot. You just have to click the "Import" tab and click the Magic Butoon, and voila, your Blogpost files are transferred.

Anyway, you have an expert to help you out. Are you going to buy your own domain and avail of the services of a webhost? Because that's another story; I think you really need a techie to help you out there. (At first, I had a hard time using the interface of my host, Bluehost. But now, it's much better. I'm learning a bit like changing WP themes and all that. But it's still work in progress, though. There are many web terminologies I don't understand in the control panel of Bluehost, my webhost.)

Having said this, all I can say is, go for it!

Hope this helps.

I agree with all the previous commenters! I love my WP blog (TV one) and wish I could find the time to move my family blog over! I've been experimenting with different layouts for the last couple months and I'm getting closer! (I'm also using BlueHost like Jayred and setting it up from scratch, hence the slow transition.)

Couple of notes...

- You should be able to redirect blogger and set WP up (in the post slugs) so that you don't lose any traffic. Take time to do this even if you have to skip a day or two of posting. Correctly done, the links will automatically be redirected to the correct WP post.

- As with any learning experience, whatever you don't know right now, you'll be able to figure out with help and using the 'net as a resource. If you have someone who can set it up and troubleshoot, you've got it made! With that aside, blogging on WP is SO much better.
