When one is afflicted with dementia
is there such a thing as unforgettable?
Can one remember her first love
nor the joy of having a new born son?
When Alzheimers poison the mind
Can he still sing with Nat King Cole
the song "Unforgettable"?
Or is that seem impossible?
If losing memory is part of old age
How do we preserve the memories?
How can we make the unforgettable
Truly unforgettable?

I wonder that too, but I think its the oldest memories that last longest?
Memories. The distant ones remain but the recent ones evaporate and disappear. Now, what was I doing?
Oh beautiful, so full of meaning. The key is surely to live every moment as if there's no other, as if unforgettable...thank you.
Oh, hugs to you Liza. What a provocative post. Thank you for sharing these questions.
Peace,

Very profound questions here. You really made me pause and think....
Memories, such fragile, stalwart things!
Thought provoking piece, to say the least...Memories are like the sun, where is it when it's invisible...
i come from a history of alzheimers,, and it is my greatest fear falling prey to its memory dissecting talons... being lost in a world i have never seen before...
I am a pastor and counselor in a community that is largely a retirement community. I have walked with many families who deal with Alzheimers. It is painful, maybe some of the deepest pain I enter.
Here is my thought on your post, which was excellent by the way. I tell people who are in deep waters that when they cannot hope they need to surround themselves with people who can hope for them. I think this is true for the one for Alzheimers, when they cannot remember they need to be surrounded by people who can remember for them - this then becomes the most precious gift you can give them as they slowly drift from this life.
