Seasons

Hubby and I went to Costco last night (just the two of us so count that as a date). Christmas decorations are already on display. I sighed with excited as I thought "Christmas season is now upon us".

We wandered some more and ended up browsing the toys in the toy isle. This is when it hits me how the season of our life as a parent/family has changed. It used to be, around this time, our cart would be stacked with the wonderful toys for our kids (gifts for Christmas) . But now we don't need it - our kids have grown and wouldn't be wanting to get these toys.

My parents are leaving for LA on Tuesday. They will be staying with my brother and his family there until my sweet sister in law gives birth. My husband keeps on asking me how am I doing with this. Am I sad that they are leaving? (possibilities are they are going back to the Philippines after this trip). I am sad for some reasons, most of it selfish reasons, but generally I am at peace. I am happy that for a season they were able to come and stay with us. It's a season of our life that we will be able to cherish forever.

I have been thinking about "church ohana" lately. For many years (about 12) we've been a part of a marriage ohana and that was a good season of our life. I believe it saved our marriage in so many ways. This year, we're out of ohana. Something happened around this time of the year last year that caused us to leave. It's a different season for us this year in terms of having a church cell group (ohana). We are "ohanaless" - a floater of some sort. The more I think about it, the more I get sad, so I usually don't think about this - I just say a prayer and tell my self that this is a season... a season for hubby and I to support each other ...

To everything there is a season - this thought gives solace and comfort. King Solomon puts it this way:

To everything there is a season, and
a time to every purpose under heaven:

A time to be born, and
a time to die;
a time to plant, and
a time to pluck up
that which is planted;

A time to kill, and
a time to heal;
a time to break down, and
a time to build up;

A time to weep, and
a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and
a time to dance;

A time to cast away stones, and
a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and
a time to refrain from embracing;

A time to get, and
a time to lose;
a time to keep, and
a time to cast away;

A time to rend, and
a time to sow;
a time to keep silence, and
a time to speak;

A time to love, and
a time to hate;
a time of war; and
a time of peace.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8
